Biography

Since receiving his PhD in Geography from the University of Western Ontario (Canada) in 1986, David Weaver has held professorial appointments in Australia, Canada, and the USA. His >200 journal articles, book chapters and books have attracted over 23,000 citations (Google Scholar). David has had an active research agenda in sustainable destination management, protected areas, Chinese tourism, and ecotourism. He has published extensively in leading journals such as Annals of Tourism Research, Tourism Management, Journal of Travel Research and Journal of Sustainable Tourism. His widely adopted textbooks include Tourism Management (5 editions) and Ecotourism (2 editions & Chinese edition) (Wiley Australia), Sustainable Tourism: Theory and Practice (Taylor & Francis), and Advanced Introduction to Sustainable Tourism (Edward Elgar). He is a Fellow Emeritus of the International Academy for the Study of Tourism and held a prestigious Chang Jiang (Yangtze River) scholarship (2017-2019) from the government of China. David is retired and currently resides on Australia’s Gold Coast.
