Biography

Bao Jigang, Ph.D., is a professor at the School of Tourism Management, Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU). 
He is the founder and first dean (2004–2018) of the School of Tourism Management, SYSU. Currently, he holds the positions of Deputy Director of the Division of Economics and Management, SYSU; Director of the Centre for Tourism Development and Planning Research; Director of the Monitoring Centre for Sustainable Tourism Observatories of UN Tourism (MCSTO); President of the China Tourism Education Association; and Vice Chairman of the Teaching Steering Committee for Tourism Management Discipline under of the Ministry of Education. In 2017, he was appointed as a Changjiang Scholar Distinguished Professor by the Ministry of Education. In 2023, he was awarded the 16th Ulysses Prize by the UNWTO (now UN Tourism). In 2024, he won the Chinese National May 1st Labor Medal and was named a National Outstanding Teacher. He has published over 300 academic papers and more than 20 books. He has led 8 projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China and the National Social Science Foundation of China, encompassing major, key, general, and youth programs. He has led provincial tourism development plans for Guangdong, Hubei, and Hunan provinces; urban tourism development plans for cities such as Guilin, Suzhou, Huangshan, Zhangjiajie, Xishuangbanna, and Zhuhai; and tourism area plans for Kanas in Xinjiang and the Greater Shangri-La region. He initiated and spearheaded the “Azheke Project”.

中山大学旅游学院创院院长(2004-2018),现任中山大学经济与管理学部副主任、旅游发展与规划研究中心主任,联合国世界旅游组织旅游可持续发展观测点管理与监测中心主任,中国旅游协会旅游教育分会会长,教育部旅游管理类专业教学指导委员会副主任委员,2017年获评教育部长江学者特聘教授,2023年获联合国旅游组织第16届尤利西斯奖,2024年获全国五一劳动奖章,2024年获评国家级教学名师。发表论文300余篇,出版著作20余部;主持国家自然科学和社会科学艺术类重大重点、面上、青年基金8项;主持广东省、湖北省、湖南省省级旅游发展规划,主持桂林市、苏州市、黄山市、张家界市、西双版纳、珠海市等城市旅游发展规划,主持新疆喀纳斯、大香格里拉等旅游区规划;倡导并主持推动了“阿者科计划”。
